Third Lament
by Eric Palmquist

WE LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE only the richest have the most freedoms, and influence. It is their voice that is so often heard in the news and in literature. It is their opinions that form law and move governments. When told to keep His followers quiet, Jesus said, “I tell you if these were silent, even the stones would cry out.” If we as disciples of Christ do not speak on behalf of the impoverished and marginalized, then who will? The Gospel of Matthew challenges this very system—“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice (righteousness), for they will be filled.” If we cannot hear the cries and laments of those in need, then we are not listening.
